St. Thomas Island Overview Tour

This is a two-hour orientation tour of St. Thomas, with stops at some of the island's highlights and exciting views of the island itself. St. Thomas is a mountainous island with one long ridge of hills running east and west through the center of the island, with smaller ridges branching off. The island is thirteen miles long by four miles wide, encompassing a little over 31 square miles. The highest point is Crown Mountain at 1,556 feet. St. Thomas has a history that dates back to 1500 B.C. and the Ciboney people. They were replaced by the Arawaks and then the Caribes, long before Christopher Columbus first saw the island in 1493 on his second voyage to the “New World.” Unfortunately, almost all signs of the pre-Columbus days have been lost to time. Most of the structures and ruins that remain date from the 16th and 17th century and include Blackbeard's Castle (Skytsborg), Fort Christian and Bluebeard’s Castle (Tower Fort). During your scenic orientation drive you will be able to see them on nearby hilltops. Riding along the crest of St. Thomas on "Skyline Drive," visitors are treated to vistas of Charlotte Amalie town, harbor as well as Hassel and Water Islands to the south; the Atlantic Ocean, Magens Bay and Inner and Outer Brass and Hans Lollick islands to the north; and the chain of cays leading to St. John and the British Virgins to the east. Your driver/guide will make stops at various scenic overlooks as traffic / safety allows. You will pass by Drake's Seat, believed to be the spot where Sir Francis Drake himself watched for enemy vessels. A stop will be made at Mountain Top, where you will take in the most amazing views from the balcony of the shopping arcade, and if you choose, purchase a “world-famous” banana daiquiri. At the end of the two-hour driving orientation, you will have the option of being dropped off in downtown Charlotte Amalie to experience its world-famous shopping or be taken back to the cruise ship dock. Please Note: Guests departing in downtown will be responsible for their transportation back to their destination. Depending on the number of guests participating, tour will be conducted in vans or open air safari buses.

In short, it's the perfect way to see the absolute best of what the Virgin Islands is all about! After snorkeling, the chef will present you with a hot Italian gourmet lunch accompanied by tropical blended drinks. After lunch, we hoist anchor and make our way to a second stop, usually one of the uninhabited cays in the Sound, such as Great St. James, where you can swim, snorkel, relax and enjoy more refreshments. This is followed by a leisurely downwind sail back to Red Hook. Please note: Your tour departs from and returns to the marina located in Red Hook. Full Day Catamaran Sail and Snorkel to St John

One of the benefits of this multi-hull boat is that it's NOT designed for the cattle boat crowds associated with cruise ship tours. With a maximum of only 45-49 guests (and often sailing with fewer), there is no sardine feeling on this full-day "Sail and Snorkel" excursion to St. John. Another benefit is the combination of speed and comfort. The captain tries to "take you off the beaten path" to show you some of those places you've dreamt about. Our expansive decks, shade awning, freshwater rinse and floats will satisfy your need for comfort". Sailing from the east end of St Thomas, you will make your way towards the uninhabited barrier islands around the island of St John. Depending on the wind and water conditions that day, your captain will anchor you at the best snorkeling location that day. You will then have approximately 45 minutes to explore the underwater world of this tropical paradise. Lunch follows, and the menu may include such items as turkey, ham, roast beef with Swiss & cheddar cheese, a selection of breads and rolls, potato and pasta salad, and a variety of condiments and trimmings. In the afternoon, the captain will look for another perfect location for another session of snorkeling. After the snorkeling, the bar is open as your catamaran sails across the beautiful blue water towards home.

VI Snuba Excursions

If you are coming in on a cruise, keep in mind Virgin Islands Snuba Excursions, LLC cannot be booked directly through your ship you must book directly with us. Virgin Islands Snuba Excursions takes out thousands of cruise customers every year that book directly through our web site. We have worked with most of the cruise lines in the past but found the pressure to rush large groups of people through the Snuba experience was not conducive to the more casual and intimate experience we like to provide you, our guests. The internet has allowed us to "cut ties" with the cruise lines while still providing the opportunity for cruise passengers to experience our tour in a much less hurried manner. Our Snuba operation differs in a few ways from the ship's Snuba tour:

Info on St.Thomas

St Thomas has green hills and white sand beaches, St. Thomas offers visitors picture-postcard views, as well as great shopping and world-class restaurants.  Perhaps that's why St. Thomas is one of the most popular ports in the Caribbean.

Once a colony of Denmark, St. Thomas is part of the U.S. Virgin Islands, along with St. John and St. Croix.  The USVI separates the Atlantic from the Caribbean, 40 miles east of Puerto Rico and 1,100 miles southeast of Miami.  This locations is a prime reason that the island has developed into such a thriving port.

Spain, France, Germany and Denmark vied for control of St. Thomas for hundreds of years.  The Danes were the first to realize that St. Thomas' value as a port far exceeded the value of its hilly terrain for plantations.  In 1692, they named the capital city Charlotte Amalie after their queen.  Realizing that they needed to populate this underdeveloped island to profit from it, the Danes brought in settlers.  St. Thomas was declared a duty-free port and did brisk business, with goods being transported from Europe to the colonies.  In 1917, the United States bought the Virgin Islands for $25 million to employ as an outpost guarding the Panama Canal.  Virgin Islanders have all of the rights and privileges of United States citizens.

PLACES OF INTEREST IN ST THOMAS

The beaches in St. Thomas are some of the best in the world because of their calm, clear waters, powdery white sand and coral reefs that can be seen by snorkelers 40 feet from the shore.  All of the best beaches in St. Thomas are within a 3-mile radius of Charlotte Amalie.

North of Charlotte Amalie is Magens Bay Beach, considered one of the top 10 beaches in the world by most travel guides.  Magens Bay offers changing facilities, chairs and snorkeling equipment rentals.  The beach is in a cove between two mountains and is a mile long, making it excellent for walking.  Hull Bay, directly west of Magens Bay, is an excellent spot for surfing during late fall and winter.

Going up to Paradise Point is another popular stop while you are in St Thomas. You can ride a tram up to the top of the mountain to get some incredible views of St Thomas.
