Info on St.Thomas
St Thomas has green hills and white sand beaches, St. Thomas offers visitors picture-postcard views, as well as great shopping and world-class restaurants. Perhaps that's why St. Thomas is one of the most popular ports in the Caribbean.
Once a colony of Denmark, St. Thomas is part of the U.S. Virgin Islands, along with St. John and St. Croix. The USVI separates the Atlantic from the Caribbean, 40 miles east of Puerto Rico and 1,100 miles southeast of Miami. This locations is a prime reason that the island has developed into such a thriving port.
Spain, France, Germany and Denmark vied for control of St. Thomas for hundreds of years. The Danes were the first to realize that St. Thomas' value as a port far exceeded the value of its hilly terrain for plantations. In 1692, they named the capital city Charlotte Amalie after their queen. Realizing that they needed to populate this underdeveloped island to profit from it, the Danes brought in settlers. St. Thomas was declared a duty-free port and did brisk business, with goods being transported from Europe to the colonies. In 1917, the United States bought the Virgin Islands for $25 million to employ as an outpost guarding the Panama Canal. Virgin Islanders have all of the rights and privileges of United States citizens.
