Acapulco is the finest resort town in Mexico—at least in the hearts of the Mexicans themselves. Residents of Guadalajara, Mexico City and other urban centers consider Acapulco their second home, and they pour into town in huge numbers to spend a lively vacation by the sea. As a result, the area is far less geared to foreign travelers than spots like Cancun or Los Cabos, but it offers a great opportunity to experience the festive atmosphere of a Mexican holiday.

Festivities aside, Acapulco Bay is simply a beautiful place to behold. Steep mountains tumble down to a wide, curved shore lined with palm trees and golden beaches. This setting has drawn travelers from inland Mexico since the 1920s, when a road was first cut through the mountains from Mexico City.

It was the glamorous faces of Hollywood who made the city a vacation hot spot in the 1940s and 1950s. Cary Grant, Eddie Fisher, Rita Hayworth and other movie stars became frequent visitors, as did Mexican celebrities, wealthy North Americans and titled Europeans. In time, the glamour set moved on to other destinations, but Acapulco has remained popular. In recent years, the city has taken measures to clean up its streets and the waters of Acapulco Bay. It has also spruced up the tourist-oriented sections of the city by organizing street vendors into specific market areas.

In the center of Acapulco’s coastline is the old city, Acapulco Viejo. The traditional Mexican zocalo, or plaza, is backed by the onion-shaped domes of the downtown church and fronted by a shoreline filled with fishing skiffs and tour boats. No stay is complete without an evening spent in the zocalo, sampling local beer and seafood at a sidewalk cafe and taking in the lively activity in the plaza.

The real city of Acapulco, with the bulk of its 1.5 million residents, sprawls inland from the plaza. Few tourists see this congested and poorly maintained community, which suffered heavy damage when hurricanes struck Acapulco in the summer of 1997. In the wake of the destruction, the federal government is attempting to improve conditions in this area.

When the government got the vendors off the streets and beaches, it set up several outdoor markets where you can buy trinkets and goods (leather jackets to plastic sandals) from all over Mexico. Bargaining is alive and well, so don’t forget to haggle. Silver is best bought in shops that specialize in it, and some advertise Taxco silver. The prices usually make it a pretty good value—about the same as what you’ll find in Taxco itself.

One of the most exciting cities in the world, Acapulco is famous for its explosive nightlife, postcard beaches, unlimited watersports, first-class hotels, gourmet restaurants and the breath-taking physical beauty of Acapulco Bay!

Here you will find massive nightclubs that are state-of-the-art temples of sensuality packed wall-to-wall with beautiful people partying until sunrise. Acapulco's warm water bay and pristine beaches have been irresistible to humans since the days of the Aztec Empire. The Spanish immediately recognized the strategic advantages of the perfectly formed bay and used it as their base to explore across the Pacific. In fact, Acapulco was the only port in the New World authorized to receive Spanish galleons from the Philippines and China.

The fishing in Acapulco, particulary sailfish, is legendary, in fact, it's news when someone doesn't catch a fish. The snorkeling and Scuba diving here are first rate and there is nothing as exciting as jumping on a jet-ski and riding at full throttle across Acapulco Bay!

 Acapulco attractions

The Golden Zone: center of the tourist zone and nightlife with many hotels and bars

Las Brisas: movie star homes, fabulous discos, and fine dining in the hills of Acapulco

Caleta: center of historic Acapulco, home of the legendary cliff divers

The Diamond Zone: the "new" Acapulco, with many luxury resorts and condominiums

Getting aroun in Acapulco
Taxis are everywhere in Acapulco. Since they are unmetered, make sure that you agree on a fare before entering. Always negotiate - they can smell tourist money a mile away. The old Volkswagen beetle cabs are cheaper than newer air conditioned cars. Shared Cabs (usually white with yellow) run between major destinations and are very convenient. They usually display their destination in large letters and charge a flat fee on $10 pesos, irrespective of distance. You should not have to pay more than $50 pesos per cab ride within the Costera area but fares can reach as much as $120 pesos for rides from La Costera to La Quebrada, Princess Hotel (Revolcadero Beach
